5 Things to Do in Beilstein, Germany

I first fell in love with the Mosel river valley a couple of years back when I visited the town of Cochem. There’s something so charming and fairytale like about this area. It’s covered by rolling slopes of vineyards, with storybook castled perched on top and the gentle river Mosel peacefully gliding down below. Beilstein, knows as the “sleeping beauty of the Mosel” is a quaint town situated along the Mosel. It’s relatively small and easy to explore. This post covers all the things you can do in Beilstein.

As I mentioned, Beilstein is tiny and can be covered in half a day or a few hours. My recommendation is to visit Beilstein along with a visit to Cochem. These two towns are only 12 minutes a part by car. You can also travel between the two cities via boat or public bus as well.

Wander Around the Town

Cobbled streets, lots of greenery, picturesque small squares, and half-timbered houses are a regular sight in Beilstein. The town really puts the Q in quaint and is indeed straight out of a fairytale. Life seems slow and easy in Beilsten.

Zehnthauskeller

One of the best things I did in Beilstein was to visit this wine bar. Situated in the heart of the old Market Square (Marktplatz), it’s a great place to grab a table outside and enjoy the surroundings. Try one of their wine flights. It was absolutely delicious!

Visit Metternich Castle

Perched high above the town of Beilstein is Metternich Castle. Although destroyed by the French in 1689, some of the ruins still exists and offers great views of the surrounding area.

See the Monastery Steps or Klostertreppe

These steps and the restaurant called Winzerschenke at the bottom of the steps is one of the most photographed parts of Beistein. In fact, this area has been used in many German films.

Visit the Carmelite Church of St. Joseph

A short walk up the steps lies the Carmelite church of St. Joseph. The church itself is from the 17 century and completed in the baroque style with vaulted ceilings.

Take Pictures of the Mosel

Climb up to higher ground and enjoy stunning views of the Mosel river flowing peacefully down below, between the lush rolling hills. If you are looking to dine with the view of the Mosel from above, check out the restaurant run by the church of St. Joseph. It offers a lovely terrace with some great views of the Mosel.
