5 Things to do in Bernkastel-Kues, Germany

Bernkastel-Kues is THE hotspot of the Middle Mosel, known for its outstanding wineries and its extremely beautiful half-timbered architecture. But that’s not all it has to offer by any means! Excursions into the surrounding area, discovering the delicious gastronomy of an outstanding culinary scene, experiencing an open-air operetta typical of the region and cruising along the Mosel on a Roman boat are also definitely worthwhile. So make sure you allow plenty of time!

1. Explore the city!

Nice half-timbered houses, the early Gothic St. Michael’s Church, the Renaissance town hall and the already legendary “Spitzhäuschen”: There is a lot to see in Bernkastel-Kues!

Für active people:  On the city walk „Familien-Rundweg“ you can get to know Bernkastel-Kues on a tour of about 2 hours.

For pleasure skaters: With the Panorama cable car you can discover the city on an approx. 45-minutes round trip. During the tour you will pass the “Cusanus-Stift”, the wine museum, the historic market place and much more.

2. Change of perspective!

Experience the city and the surrounding landscape from a new perspective.

For active people: Nature is best discovered on foot. Why not hike on one of our numerous hiking trails such as the “Goldbachtal-Höhenweg” in Andel or on the family hiking trail “Walderlebnispfad Lieser” on the Kueser Plateau.

For pleasure skaters: steep vineyards, rugged cliffs, magnificent views: that’s what a boat trip on the Moselle offers you. Either as an approx. 1-hour round trip or as an excursion e.g. to the famous Machern monastery in Wehlen. Simply lay back and enjoy!

3. Stroll through the old town of Bernkastel!

Many small shops and stores are perfect for a stroll through town. In addition, fine cafés and ice-cream parlours are tempting!

Enjoy the sun’s rays with a delicious ice-cream sundae or have a good time with coffee & cake. If you are looking for the perfect souvenir, you will certainly find it in one of the charming shops such as the historic candy factory “Bonbon Willi”.

4. Knight meets damsel!

A journey into the past – this is exactly what the castle ruins of Landshut make possible. Once you reach the top, there is a magnificent view of the old town of Bernkastel, the mountain ranges of the Eifel, the Moselle and the Kues district.

If you want to enjoy the beautiful panorama even longer, you can stop off at the castle’s café or restaurant.
For active people: A sporty walk takes you through the beautiful vineyards up to the historic castle in only 25 minutes.
For pleasure skaters: A relaxed 20-minute ride on the Burg Landshut Express will take you to the castle.

5. The treasure of the Moselle!

Then you should stop by for a wine tasting at one of the numerous winegrowers in Bernkastel, Kues, Wehlen and Andel or in the vinotheque – an absolute must during a stay on the Moselle!

6. Joy of life, tradition and delicious wines!

Especially in summer and autumn there is a lot to experience in Bernkastel-Kues and the surrounding villages!

During this time there are numerous festivals with music, great atmosphere and delicious wine along the Moselle. There are also concerts of the “Mosel Musikfestival” and numerous events of the “Kulturzeit”. The perfect end for a day in Bernkastel-Kues!
