Gordes, the prettiest hilltop village in Provence is a must-visit, not only for a photo of its picture-perfect charm, but also because its a fun little stop.

This lovely village overlooking the lush Luberon is a one hour drive from Aix-en-Provence and 45 minutes from Avignon, making it a perfect day trip from either.

Settled by well-known artists Andre Lhote and Marc Chagal after WWII, it also attracted modern day artists like Victor Vasarely, and Pol Mara, all adding to its allure.

View-Point Hill

This view is likely the first things you’ll see as view-point hill is right before Gordes when coming from Avignon or Aix-en-Provence. It’s at the cross roads of Route de Cavaillon and Chemin de Gaumaud. Or, simply google ’Town View Point Gordes’ to find it on the map. There’s a small area for cars to park on the hilltop.

Le Chateau de Gordes

This medieval fortress-turned Renaissance castle sits at the top of Gordes hill. It’s lovely to walk the grounds of the area and experience the views. If you want to go inside, there is a fee for the art exhibit that’s usually here.

Les Caves du Palais Saint-Fermin

Natural caves, expanded upon by villagers in the Middles Ages who used this network of cellars as a place of refuge, as well as a place to make and store food. With over 7 levels of cellars, it’s still under excavation. The caves contain an ancient olive press, bread oven, grain silo, cistern, storage bins, and more.

Wander Winding Cobblestone Roads

Just wandering the winding cobblestoned streets of this little gem is a great thing to do. You’ll see views of the Luberon between the ancient walls, and discover interesting architectural details and quaint cafes.

Tuesday Morning Market

Set up at the base of the castle, this market takes place every Tuesday morning from 8-12:30. This Provencal market is full of fabrics, linens, soaps, and lavender, as well as produce, breads, cheeses, meats, and local specialties to make a picnic if you want.

It can get really crowded in peak season, so arrive early to get around more easily. Remember to bring cash for the smaller, local vendors.

About 2.5 miles (4 km) from Gordes is a delightful 12th century Cistercian abbey, Abbaye de Sénanque. Still functioning today, it’s especially lovely when the lavender is in full bloom.
